CURRAREVAGH

Oughterard, County Galway

Currarevagh House is a gracious early Victorian Country House Hotel, set in 180 acres of private parkland and woodland bordering on Lough Corrib. We offer an oasis of privacy for guests in an idyllic, undisturbed natural environment, providing exceptional personal service with a high standard of accommodation and old fashioned, traditional character. A genuine warm welcome from the owners.

Currarevagh (pronounced “Curra – reeva”) still retains the atmosphere of a bygone age where the emphasis is on hospitality and service. It is run along the lines of a private country house rather than as an impersonal hotel and while extremely comfortable it is not pretentious. The tranquil informality lends itself to those seeking a relaxing few days, enjoying our house and grounds or exploring the beauty of Lough Corrib, Connemara, Galway and beyond.

Our 12 bedrooms are individually styled and offer undisturbed views of either Lough Corrib or the mountains to the North. Guests have exclusive use of three comfortable sitting rooms to relax beside open turf fires, enjoy the breathtaking view, browse our many bookshelves or quietly snooze to the sound of… nothing.

A lavish Edwardian breakfast is laid out on the dining room sideboard each morning and in the evening a four-course dinner is served, based on local fresh ingredients. For those exploring during the day guests can try one of Currarevagh’s famous picnics or avail of a light snack lunch. Afternoon Tea, served in the drawing room, is a well known ritual enjoyed by many.

With the emphasis at Currarevagh Country House on escaping the hectic, commercialised world and unwinding in a breath-taking, tranquil setting, we have twelve bedrooms all of differing character and style.

Accommodation is comfortable, with ensuite bathrooms, evening turn down service and hot water bottles when the wind howls outside. Bedrooms have accommodation that is double or twin bedded, and we also have two single bedded rooms for the lone traveller not wanting to pay single supplements. Our largest room can comfortably sleep a family of 2 adults and two children.

Currarevagh House Hotel prides itself on its unique and individual character, and this is very evident in its delicious food. Mindful of its Irish roots and a history steeped in providing hospitality to guests over hundreds of years, we provide a food experience in our guest restaurant that you will not find elsewhere in Oughterard.

With a cuisine based on fresh, local produce, Currarevagh House Hotel has gained many accolades in the better known hotel, restaurant and food  guides, as well as the international press.

Breakfast is a lavish affair true to its Edwardian roots. Each morning this feast is laid out on the dining room side board, with freshly squeezed juice, Full Irish Breakfast including locally made sausages, pudding and bacon; honey roast ham and selection of cheeses; our daily baked soda bread, croissants and crust-less toast, home made marmalades and granola are specialities. Everything you can wish for to keep you going for the day, served from 8.00am until 11.00am - or later if a lazy day is on the cards.

Afternoon Tea is a well known ritual enjoyed by many. Served in the drawing room a selection of teas are available, along with our own fruitcakes, sponge cakes and seasonal specialities. Cucumber sandwiches, hot drop pancakes, and scones of many varieties all feature. Afternoon Tea from 4.30pm to 6.00pm is not to be missed and only for residents.

Each evening a four course dinner is served. This has become our main focus in recent years, with Lucy having taken the stoves by storm and placed us firmly at the forefront of Irish Country House Cooking. Always local, always seasonal, with flourishes from our gardens and grounds, you will rarely experience this standard of original cuisine.
